The big idea was to create a world where A’ja’s aura shined bright—to depict her in the most authentic way possible, letting her infectious personality come through, while also showcasing her as an elite, phenomenal athlete. This was special becuase Nike women’s basketall hadn’t released a signature shoe for a black female basketball athlete since 2001, which was a Sheryl Swoopes shoe. Long overdue, and I’m glad to have been a part of this incredible moment for A’ja. The concept centered around black ancestral quilt-making, which informed the basketball-themed patterns. Our muse was the great Lusia Harris, the first female drafted into the NBA. The era in which she played college ball inspired our classic approach to details and placements throughout the uniforms and socks (1970’s). I collaborated with the talented Drew Little and Damar Fairbanks from the Adidas team. of NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo by paying homage to his roots, being born and raised in Athens, Greece. We felt that his story needed to be told to the world, so we dug into that and built upon it. The idea was to parallel his iconic rise to that of classic figures within greek mythology.
